Katherine Heigl has opened herself about her experience of being born into a "white bubble" and how the realisation has impacted how she parents her adopted multiracial children. In an interview, the "Firefly Lane" actress, along with "Grey's Anatomy", actress revealed her body didn't matter to her. However, when having a conversation with her adoptive sister in South Korea about how society had treated them, she was conscious of the differences their lives were. "I inquired of my sister, Meg to tell me if she'd been treated one way when she went out in public with our parents and a different way when she went out by herself without them. Meg replied "Oh Yes! All the all the time!" That made me realize that I was naive," Heigl said to parents. The actor said she became frustrated, but decided to channel her anger to help adopt her daughters. Heigl is the mother of a 4-year-old son who is married to her 13 year old spouse, Josh Kelley. The couple adopted Nancy Leigh (age 12) from South Korea and Adalaide (age 8) with a black complexion and was adopted in 2009.
